COLUMBUS, Ohio (WCMH) – Tonight, 50 children in the Columbus area will drift off to sleep in a bed to call their own.
The Furniture Bank of Central Ohio presented the kids their brand-new beds earlier this morning at the Arts Impact Middle School. NBC4 was thrilled to be the media partner for this event.
Daytime Columbus reporter Gabrielle Phifer emceed a brief ceremony before the big reveal. After the countdown, each child searched for their bed and the joy on their faces was evident when they finally found the one that belong to them.
They received a bed frame, box springs and mattress. They also took home bedding including sheets, a pillow and comforter along with a teddy bear, a book and backpack.
Lanysha Pickens, mother of three, was in tears at the generosity.
“It is very special. We didn’t have any beds at all and now we get to come home with a bed. We are very excited,” she said.
This was all made possible through the Columbus Hope to Dream program.
A portion of every mattress purchased at local Morris Home Furniture Company, Ashley Furniture or Better Sleep Shop showrooms is donated to the Furniture Bank of Central Ohio.
That allows the donation center to provide beds to children in need in Central Ohio.
“This is one of my favorites times of the entire year. to be able see the smile on a child’s face and provide something it really feels amazing,” Regional Director at Morris Home Furniture, Jim Davis said.
More than 50 volunteers assisted with putting the beds together prior to the event.
