Fear doesn’t keep UA’s first mayor of color from making change in the community

UPPER ARLINGTON, Ohio (WCMH) – The city of Upper Arlington has a new mayor and it’s a historic moment for residents.

On January 8, 2024, Ukeme Awakessien Jeter took up the roles of mayor and council president becoming the first person of color to hold these positions.

Though, it’s not the first time she’s been classified as a history maker. In 2022, she was the first person of color elected on UA’s city council.

“I wasn’t deterred,” Awakessien Jeter said.

She sat down with Gabrielle Phifer for an interview inside the council chambers. They discussed the meaning of her name, her family’s transition to Upper Arlington and the reason she decided to run for office.
