(NBC) — For a while, crossovers for all three of NBC’s “Chicago” dramas were a regular occurrence, the pandemic and other events have kept them from happening in recent years, but now, the shows will combine again on Wednesday.

It has been more than five years since the last “Chicago” crossover.

“I think the last crossover was incredible and epic and also prophetic,” said LaRoyce Hawkins, who takes on the role of Officer Kevin Atwater in “Chicago P.D.” “We kind of alluded to a virus that was airborne.”

But no virus Wednesday, just eye-popping action for actor Darren Barnet, who plays Dr. John Frost in a new role on “Chicago Med.”

“It was so much fun, battling the elements, really being outside, working with fire, very high stakes scenarios,” said Barnet. “I have the most respect and the most fun. It was an absolute thrill.”

A gas explosion threatens a city government building and the people inside. Meanwhile, a subway tunnel collapses, trapping characters Stella Kidd, played by Miranda Rae Mayo, and Adam Ruzek, played by Patrick Flueger, of “Fire” and “P.D.” respectively.

“Oh my gosh, yes!” expressed Mayo about the scene. “Chicago hell train, baby!”

“All of these characters love each other very much in different versions of love and what we discover in this crossover, I think, is pretty incredible,” said Hawkins.

Making for a three-hour thriller.

“I do genuinely believe this is the best crossover that we’ve ever done,” said Mayo.

Wednesday’s “Chicago” crossover begins on NBC4 with “Fire” at 8 p.m., followed by “Med” and then, “PD.”
