(NBC) — NBC’s medical comedy “St. Denis Medical” wraps up its first season Tuesday, with one nurse still striving for that work-life balance and another potentially looking at an unexpected romance.

Last week’s “St. Denis Medical” gave nurse Alex and her colleagues a chance to show a different side at the hospital’s annual gala.

“Oh, so much fun,” said cast member Allison Tolman, who plays Alex. “It was really fun. It was fun to see everybody dressed up. And then it was really fun to have Alex get a little bit tipsy. It was a real treat, yeah.”

And the first time seeing the characters away from the hospital.

“Work is not people’s lives and it shouldn’t be,” Tolman said. “There needs to be boundaries, they need to have a balance so they can have that life outside of the office or the hospital.”

The gala is also where Matt was hoping for a romantic breakthrough with fellow nurse Serena

“The show is so funny, but it’s so heartfelt,” said Kahyun Kim, who plays Serena. “And there are so many real moments about it.”

The gala itself didn’t quite go as planned, but what happened after provided hope.

“It is the story of, ‘Can a brave woman overcome the appearance of this goofy nurse?’” said Mekki Leeper, who plays Matt.

Tuesday’s finale might offer some insight.

“Honestly, as a fan watching, they are very cute,” said Kim. “Like, it’s really cute.”

Matt and Serena’s storyline is one of many in the mix when “St. Denis Medical” returns for Season 2.

“Season 1 of a show is about world-building, and now, we get to play in the world that we’ve built,” said Tolman. “I’m excited about that.”

The show’s fans should be, too.

Watch the season finale of “St. Denis Medical” on Tuesday at 8 p.m. on NBC4, followed by “Night Court.”
