COLUMBUS, Ohio (WCMH) — NBC4 is the proud media sponsor of a new and exciting event in Columbus benefiting Autism Speaks.

The first Empower Summit and Challenge in Columbus will be on May 9 and 10. This two-day event is designed to be a transformative movement for the Autism Community. Day one is focused on connecting employers and disability advocates to improve job training, hiring practices and workplace inclusion in Ohio. On day two, thousands of participants will choose to run or walk to make a lifetime of difference for autistic people.

NBC4’s Jerod Smalley, a long-time advocate for Autism Speaks, will emcee the event and bring viewers special coverage leading up to this inaugural event.

The Empower Summit and Challenge, launched as part of Autism Speaks’ 20th anniversary celebration, is a transformative two-day event dedicated to advancing inclusion and driving meaningful change for the autism community in five markets: Dallas, Chicago, Columbus, Houston and Miami.

Event Summary:
• On day one, the Empower Summit will be hosted at the Columbus Museum of Art, featuring keynote speakers, local Columbus businesses, breakout sessions and more. Key speakers and partners include:

o Dr. Thomas Frazier, Professor at John Carroll University and Chairman Autism Speaks Board of Directors
o Representatives from Key Bank, HBD, OCALI, and NCH Project Search Program

• On day two, the Empower Challenge will be hosted at Coffman Park and invites participants to run in the 5K or 10K courses or walk the traditional 1-mile family walking course to make a lifetime of difference for autistic people. Join with friends, colleagues and the autism community to raise critical funds, drive awareness and demonstrate how together, we are creating a more inclusive world.
