MARION, IA (WCMH) — A couple in Marion, Iowa is getting ready to celebrate a huge milestone: 80 years of marriage.
Gene and Vern Ann Baxter are both 102 years old. They tell KCRG-TV that this August, they’ll be celebrating their 80th wedding anniversary.
Despite being together for the last 8 decades, the couple says they remember when they first met like it was just yesterday.
“We met on the 17th of January, 1936,” Gene Baxter said. “She just hung right onto me. She met me on the 17th of January, and boy she got me married the 22nd of August.”
The couple went on to have three children and a long, happy life. And yes, like most couples, there’s still a little nitpicking from time to time.
“I don’t like his haircut sometimes,” Vern Ann Baxter said.
But at the end of the day, their love is still going strong.
“We both got older and smarter! She has been real good – a terrific wife. Couldn’t ask for anything better,” Gene Baxter told KCRG-TV.
