BOSTON (WCMH/CNN) — Miranda Fabregas is now 7 days old and as cute as they come. But when she was 2 days old, there was a moment that could have turned tragic if not for her 11-year-old sister Alise.
“She had been spitting up so I heard her about to spit up and all of a sudden she just, it wasn’t coming out, it was so scary,” said mom Jamie Fabregas.
Alise took over, having just learned CPR and the Heimlich maneuver in school.
“I told my mom to turn her around and at an angle and pat her back,” Alise said. “That way the spit up could come out. And I also called the nurse.”
Alise and her sixth-grade class are taught CPR and measures to save infants at school. Health teacher Chad Kelley said he thought it may come in handy.
“So, CPR is really what we primarily focus is on, but we do deal with choking victims whether they’re infants, children or adults,” Kelley said to CNN affiliate WBZ. “So in this case it was an infant and Alise did a great job.”
Reporter Bill Shields asked if Alise was nervous.
“I was a little but I tried to like just be in the moment and save her, I didn’t want anything to happen to her,” she said.
Alise said she wants to be a veterinarian when she grows up.
