LAS VEGAS, NV (WCMH) – After more than seven decades waiting to meet her siblings, Katherine Fisher finally got her wish.
When Fisher was born, her mother gave her up for adoption to a couple who placed an ad in a newspaper. Fisher’s biological sister, Sonta Henderson, still has the clipping of the ad.
“We didn’t know if she was alive, if she was not or where,” Henderson told KLAS.
Fisher spent most of her life searching for her biological family. There were many roadblocks along the way, including inaccurate information on her birth certificate and the fact that she was never legally adopted.
Fisher’s granddaughter Amiee Sands stepped in to help with the search nine years ago.
“I was a little, you know, obsessed over it,” Sands said. She followed every lead she could find. “I was just searching the censuses, the phonebooks, the year books, the military records.”
When those searches didn’t work, she turned to DNA testing. After three samples, Sands found a first cousin who reached out to Henderson earlier this year.
“It was hard to believe really,” Sands said. “I was always doing all the work thinking ‘What if this, what if all this time and nothing ever pans out?’”
Fisher met her biological sisters for the first time on Thursday.
“I’m so happy,” Fisher said. “It’s so surreal. What a great Christmas present!”
“I never thought this could happen in a million years,” said Betty, Fisher’s other biological sister. “It’s just a dream come true.”
