XENIA, Ohio (WDTN) – A 9-month-old child was flown to Dayton Children’s Hospital after being bitten by a dog Friday afternoon.

It happened around 1:30pm in the 800 block of Dayton Avenue in Xenia.

Police say the baby was bitten by a dog when a family member watching the baby stepped out of the room.

“For some unknown reason, the dog attacked the baby,” said Sgt. Gary Johnson with the Xenia Police Division.

The child lived at the house, registered to a Mariah Caplinger, according to Greene County Property records.

The child was transported to Greene Memorial Hospital and is listed in critical condition.

“Well, any time you have an infant, the infant is going to react, the infant is going to move around and make noises, and dogs are going to react to that in different ways and there’s just no way to know… you might feel like you have a gentle dog, but you don’t know how that dog is going to react to that new baby in the house and it becomes upset, or something like that. So, you’ve just got to keep an eye on them, try to keep them out of reach of the dog and make sure that you’re doing everything you can to keep them safe,” Sgt. Johnson said.

The dog was taken by animal control and will be kept under quarantine for 10 days. After that time is up, investigators will decide what happens to the Border Collie-Chow mix.
