AUSTIN (KXAN) – The controversial textbook on Mexican-American history will once again take center stage on Tuesday. Mexican American Heritage is on the list of proposed textbooks the Texas State Board of Education is considering to use in the 2017-18 school year.

Some scholars, state lawmakers and activists say the book is filled with inaccurate depictions of Mexican-American history and culture. Tuesday morning they are taking that message to the state board and plan to hold a rally at the William B.Travis Building during a hearing about the textbook.

Initially, the education board’s decision to promote the textbook was a win for advocates who have questioned the state’s history curriculum-arguing it doesn’t properly cover Hispanic culture. Now, those same advocates are asking the board to reject the textbook. An independent review of the textbook found more than 140 factual errors and promoted offensive stereotypes. Mexican American Heritagewas the only submission the board received after it issued a call for textbooks to be used in Mexican-American studies classes at the high school level.

University of Texas Professor of History, Emilio Zamora reviewed the book and says there are some serious flaws.

“They depict the Mexican-American community in stereotypical terms, as lazy, as threats to American society. It’s not only disturbing for me as a historian but I find it very offensive that they should be speaking so carelessly,” Zamora said.

The books publishing company Momentum Instruction is defending the work saying  “There’s never been a book in the history of SBOE that’s been attacked so prematurely in the process,” said Cynthia Dunbar- a former republican member of the education board who now heads the educational company who produced the book.

A final vote by the state board on whether to approve or reject the book will come in November. The state says even if the book is approved, school districts are not required to use it and may purchase other instructional materials to use in the Mexican American Studies class.
