COLUMBUS, Ohio (WCMH) – A local athletic club is stressing its “commitment to families” after a Dublin mom says she was shamed there for breastfeeding her baby.
It started Thursday morning. Aidan Johnson is a mother of two. She says she was breastfeeding her 8-month-old son in the café at Premier at Sawmill Athletic Club when a manager approached and offered to move her to a more private area.
Johnson says she’s been breastfeeding for 31 months and she’s never been made to feel embarrassed about it. She has a membership to the gym.
Ohio law allows public breastfeeding.
NBC4 reached out repeatedly to the general manager and even stopped by twice Thursday night. Friday afternoon the gym’s president emailed a statement.
“At Premier at Sawmill Athletic Club we love families. We have a long standing commitment proudly supporting mothers who wish to breastfeed their children. As such, we confirm that mothers may breastfeed comfortably during their visits to the club. We regret any misunderstanding and we welcome this opportunity to clarify with all of our employees and members our commitment to families.”
-Regan Koivisto, President, Premier at Sawmill Athletic Club
Aidan Johnson and her husband say they will no longer be members at the gym.
