Baby dies when stroller falls down NYC elevator shaft

NEW YORK (WCMH/AP) – New York police say a 6-week-old baby has died after a stroller crashed down a Brooklyn elevator shaft.

The New York Police Department says a 21-year-old  woman was waiting with the stroller on the 23rd floor of an apartment building at around 11:40 a.m. Thursday. When the elevator doors opened, she pushed the stroller inside, but the car wasn’t there.


The child and the stroller fell to the 15th floor, an NYPD official told NBC affiliate WNBC-TV. The baby was pronounced dead at a hospital.

The baby girl, identified as Areej Ali, of Brooklyn, was pronounced dead at Coney Island Hospital.The NYPD official told WNBC-TV the elevator was out of service at the time. It’s not clear why the doors opened if the elevator was out of service.
