DUBLIN, OH (WCMH) — Columbus police officers opened fire and wounded a suspected bank robber following a short chase in the Dublin area.

Just after 10:06am, officers were dispatched to the Key Bank location located at 5775 Frantz Road. Officers spotted the suspected robber in a black SUV and chased after him to the 4600 block of Lakehurst Court. The suspect allegedly got out of the vehicle and raised a gun at the officers.

Police spokesperson Denise Alex-Bouzounis said  Lieutenant Eric David and Sargeant James Sheehan fired multiple shots and wounded the suspect, who is described as a black man in his early 20s. He was taken to Grant Medical Center in critical condition. Police say his weapon was recovered at the scene on Lakehurst Court.

The shooting happened outside the Centurylink building. Some bullets penetrated the glass at the building, but employees inside tell NBC4 that no one was injured.

All officers are okay.

Columbus Police Chief Kim Jacobs said her officers train with real-life shooting scenarios so officers can react quickly.

“…you just never know,” she said. “A rainy, cold Friday afternoon and something happens and they are prepared for it, I am really happy that we have done this ongoing training.”

As with all officer-involved shootings, the officers will be put on administrative leave and are required to see a police psychologist.

The incident will be investigated  by the Critical Incident Response Team.

“So the officers that came to work today were just going to do their job, but now they are under criminal investigation, because we want to know whether or not they fired their guns within the law,” Jacobs said.

Liutenant David is a 21-year veteran of the Columbus Division of Police and Sergeant Sheehan has been with the force for 17 years.
