COLUMBUS (WCMH) — Bishop Hartley High School is the 2016 Division IV Football state champions. It’s the second straight year the Hawks have won the state championship, and this one came in dramatic fashion.
With less than two minutes left in the game and the score tied at 21, Steubenville lined up for a go-ahead field goal. But the kick barely got into the air and Hartley linebacker Cody Kirkbride grabbed the ball out of the air and ran it back to the Steubenville 31 yard line. The Hawks then ran the clock down to two seconds, setting up sophomore Matteo Agriesti for a 31 yard field. Agriesti connected on the kick and the Hawks players and coaches stormed on to the field to celebrate their 24-21 win.
It’s the 4th state title in Bishop Hartley football history.
