COLUMBUS (WCMH)–The city of Columbus may redevelop part of the 2.1-acre North Market site, according to our partners at Columbus Business First.

Columbus Development Director Steve Schoeny said the city plans to issue a request for proposals in mid-October for the land. The city owns the entire lot at 59 Spruce Street, including the building and parking lot.

Schoeny told Business First that the city is willing to sell the land, or even demolish and start anew–but added that knocking down the 116-year-old building is unlikely.

The city has three goals, according to BizFirst: Enhance North Market’s physical space, improve its financial condition, and make the neighborhood better.

Rick Harrison Wolfe, executive director of the North Market Development Authority, said there isn’t enough room in the building in general. He said there are 35 tenants there now, and that more space and better facilities will help support the businesses.

The North Market has been in its current building since 1995.
