CLEVELAND, OH (WCMH) – Across the city of Cleveland, there were several protests as the Republican National Convention continued Tuesday.

At some of them, the situation escalated as groups representing different viewpoints clashed with police and with each other.

In Public Square Tuesday afternoon, Black Lives Matter protesters gathered, as well as religious groups and anti-abortion activists. Bicycle cops used their bikes to push protesters back.

“Protest organizers all along told the city it was a mistake to put both sides in the same park here,” one protester said, speaking to the Cleveland police chief. “They went ahead and did it and this is the result.”

Speaking to reporters after, the chief said, “Our commanders took a look at it and said we needed to kind of slice the pie and get control of it.”

He noted there was no need to use force to control the protesters.

Later in the afternoon, a few vocal protesters faced off with police at East 9th and Lakeside Avenue.

“This is what’s wrong with America,” one protester said, questioning police on why he couldn’t protest on the closed road ahead. “You have to realize that.”

Police declared the scene an “unlawful assembly” and told the crowd of mostly media and a few protesters, “You have five minutes to leave. If you refuse to move, you will be arrested.”

Police say no one was arrested after the afternoon protests.

Spokeswoman Sgt. Jennifer Ciaccia says police are trying to work with protesters. She said that has been the department’s posture all along.

She said Tuesday evening that five people have been arrested in total, including one person on an outstanding warrant, one person for trying to steal a state trooper’s gas mask and three people who allegedly climbed flag poles at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame on Tuesday morning.
