COLUMBUS (WCMH) — During the winter, most of us enjoy a warm car ride into work. But there are a few diehards who say cycling to work is the way to go.

Kathleen Koechlin has been riding her bike to work for three years and says the key is knowing what to wear.

“My neighbor thinks I’m crazy, my coworkers think I’m crazy,” she said. “(I’ve got) four layers on my legs, an extra pair of socks, lined cloves, and then the goggles, which would then cover the rest of my face.”

Koechlin does this for several reasons.

“This saves money, for one, and also it’s good for my health. It’s a win-win situation.”

Gary Cox just started pedaling to work this month.

“I am 58 years old and I’m riding in the snow, and it’s so much fun,” he said.

Cox says the hardest part is sharing the road with drivers.

“Just realize that there are patches of ice,” he said. “We’re going to have to swerve around the ice. We are going to have to be in a safe place in the lane and cars are just going to go around us.”

Koechlin agrees and says that even though there may be bike lanes, the weather may throw them a curve.

“Often times, they are not cleared as well as the main road, so it’s safer for us to be on the main road.

So even though it may be 5 degrees out, these bicyclists say they wouldn’t have it any other way.
