COLUMBUS (WCMH) – For the second day in a row, Columbus City Schools dismissed students early because of the scorching hot temperatures inside and outside the classrooms.
Summer-like weather soared into the 90s and caused the district to cancel all after school sports and activists Monday, but decided to let athletes hit the field today.
Players are happy to be back on the field, while coaches stressed the importance of staying hydrated.
Coming off of a tough loss the Eastmoor Titan Warrior football team is glad to be back on the field despite the hot temperatures.
“From a football prospective it’s not really anything that changed. We practice during the summer two-a-days and in this type of weather,” said football player, Micah Coleman.
Drinking plenty of water and staying hydrated is what coaches and athletic trainers are stressing to players during Tuesday’s practice.
“One thing we stress here is that hydration, it doesn’t start on Friday nights, it starts Saturday morning,” said Eastmoor Academy Athletic Director, James Washington.
Water, Gatorade and ice buckets were on hand throughout practice.
“Times are different now. Just being cautious of the heat. There has been athletes that have died because of the heat. So it is something that as a district we don’t take it lightly,” said Washington.
Columbus City Schools will dismiss at the regular time on Wednesday, according to spokesperson Scott Varner.
