COLUMBUS (WCMH) — Columbus police officers said an abandoned puppy was made an honorary K-9 for the night, after it was tossed out of a car late Monday evening.
Now, that dog may have found its forever home with the officers who rescued him.
Ofc. David Drenning said it all started out with a call for a stranded motorist near Morse Road and Appian Way. Then, a passerby alerted the officers to an abandoned dog near the road.
“Sure enough we find this little dog with a leash attached and they said there was a green Toyota that stopped and just let the dog out and drove off,” said Ofc. Drenning.
He was able to scoop up the dog, before it got hit by a car.
Ofc. Drenning said they weren’t able to find the person who abandoned the puppy, so he called for a dog warden to see if it was micro-chipped.
“That’s the biggest concern is maybe somebody did lose a dog,” he said. “Maybe somebody took it out of some kind of disturbance, but (we) couldn’t find the owner.”
After finding the dog wasn’t micro-chipped, Ofc. Jennier Alicea gave the puppy a safe place to stay at her home.
“He was sitting in our cruisers. He was pretty freely running around, eating snacks and just really playful,” she said. “It wasn’t what you’d expect for a puppy that was abandoned on the side of road.”
So far, no one has called about a missing dog. Ofc. Alicea and Drenning are first in line to adopt him.
“Me and the other officer decided that one of us is going to adopt it,” said Ofc. Drenning. “He was just too cute to give him up.”
They’re not sure how old or what kind of dog he is, but they did give him a name.
“We named him temporarily, Morse, because we found him off of Morse Road, so we thought it was a proper name,” said Ofc. Drenning.
It’s safe to say Morse has stolen both of these officers’ hearts.
Ofc. Drenning and Alicea want to remind the public if you have a dog you can’t care for, don’t leave it on the side of the road. Instead, take it to the Franklin County Dog Shelter.
