COLUMBUS (WCMH)–Olivia Grant says she was driving along S.R. 161 on Thursday when she saw a family of ducks in the middle of the road.

She called police immediately, and she and Matt Farkas circled around to see if she could help the mother and her 9 ducklings.

“When we found her again, she was in the median on top of the storm drain,” Grant explained in a Facebook post. “Some of her ducklings had panicked and fell in. There was no way they were getting out by themselves. Unfortunately, when we got out to rescue them, the momma duck flew away.”

Enter Sgt. Michael Smith with the Columbus Division of Police, who is with freeway patrol.

Grant said Smith removed the storm drain, and allowed her and Farkas to climb down to save the ducklings.

She says the mother duck did not return to the scene, so she took the ducks home with her for the night and then to a wildlife center the next morning.

“…someone there said that they looked happy and healthy. I’m so thankful,” she said in an email to NBC4.
