COLUMBUS, Ohio (WCMH)–Will she be Nora? Desna? Kaya? Or Sakari?
The Columbus Zoo and Aquarium opened voting Tuesday on its website to name an almost three-month-old female polar bear cub. The contest ends Feb. 3.
Here are the four options:
- Desna, an Inuit name meaning “boss”
- Kaya, a native American name meaning “little but wise”
- Nora, a blending of her parents’ names (Nanuq and Aurora)
- Sakari, an Inuit name meaning “sweet”
The cub was one of two born Nov. 6, 2015, to mother Aurora, and father Nanuq. A little less than a week after the cubs were born, Aurora began taking breaks from caring for the surviving cub. When these breaks continued throughout the day and became longer, the Zoo says its Animal Care staff made the decision to remove the cub from the den and began to hand-rear the newborn.
