POWELL, OH (WCMH) — The people have spoken. The Columbus Zoo and Aquarium gave people the chance to vote on one of the newest Humboldt penguin chick’s name and Pippa has won.
Voters had the choice of Pippa, Penelope, Penny or Gwen, with Pippa getting 36 percent of the votes.
Penelope came in second with 27 percent, followed by Gwen with 19 percent and Penny with 18 percent.
The zoo says a total of 17, 946 votes were tallied for the “Name the Penguin” contest that ran from June 15-27.
Pippa is one of three Humboldt penguins that recently hatched at the Zoo; she hatched March 18 to parents Katja and Hans.
The other two Humboldt penguins were named by Zoo staff: Ziggy Stardust, who hatched March 17, is the female offspring of Asela and Chirriante; and Dr. Oswald Cobblepot (named after The Penguin in the Batman comics), who hatched March 20, is the male offspring of Ava and Gunter.
These newborns are an important addition to the Humboldt penguin species, the populations of which are declining in their native habitats. The Columbus Zoo and Aquarium is one of only a few facilities in North America that is qualified by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums to participate in Humboldt Penguin Species Survival Plan breeding program. What others are clicking on:
