POWELL, OH (WCMH) — Two new female Asian elephants have arrived at the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium.

According to the zoo, 14-year-old Rudy, and 8-year-old Sundara (Sunny) arrived at the zoo earlier this morning.

They were born at the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Center for Elephant Conservation. The zoo says it hopes the male elephants at the Columbus Zoo, Hank and Beco, will breed with the two new females and produce calves.

Asian elephants are listed as an endangered species, so every birth is important as a hedge against extinction, according to the zoo. Following standard protocol, Sunny and Rudy will be in quarantine before being introduced to the other Columbus Zoo elephants and Zoo visitors.
