Dublin, Ohio (WCMH) – Two major construction projects near Dublin could slow travel to the Memorial Tournament at Muirfield Village Golf Club.
The annual tournament presented by Nationwide runs Monday through June 5. It draws thousands of people to the course each day, bringing waves of heavy traffic in and out of the course area.
The City of Dublin is working with the Ohio Department of Transportation to make sure at least one of the projects doesn’t hamper the flow of traffic.
ODOT has been busy rebuilding the U.S. 33 and Interstate 270 interchange. Lane restrictions will be at a minimum while the tournament is underway.
“There will be two lanes in each direction along U.S. 33, in addition to those exit lanes,” explained Corporal Tom Gallagher of the Dublin Police Department. “Once you get off onto Avery Road there are no restrictions.”
Dublin Police recommend tournament guests use various parking lots near the course. Many like the one near the sixth hole offer shuttle service. Beginning Thursday through Sunday, golf patrons can park at the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium where a shuttle will take them to the main entrance to Muirfield Village Golf Club.
The other construction project in the area will likely slow traffic, the installation of a roundabout at the intersection of State Route 161 and Riverside Drive. Residents know about the turning restrictions, but police worry about drivers unfamiliar with the area.
“There are no turns at the intersection. What that means is if you’re on 161, you’ll continue east or west,” said Corporal Gallagher. “If you’re on Riverside you’ll head north and south.”
Parking in residential areas is restricted. Signs lining many lawns warn drivers they will be towed.
Corporal Gallagher said they want everyone to have fun and be safe. Dublin Police encourages the use of taxis or rideshare services for patrons that will be drinking during their visit.
