DELAWARE, Ohio (WCMH)–In a meeting room at the Delaware County Jail on Tuesday, Matthew Rausenberg told NBC4 he would have been willing to take a plea deal to avoid trial.

But, he said the prosecutor’s offer of 20 years to life didn’t fairly represent what he needed to take responsibility for.

Rausenberg, a former Olentangy Local Schools teacher, was found guilty Monday on 34 counts of gross sexual imposition, four counts of kidnapping and three counts of pandering.

Delaware County Prosecutor Carol O’Brien says she doesn’t believe Rausenberg ever had any interest in a plea deal.

“I think he truly believed that he was so much smarter than everybody and so much better than everybody that he could talk his way around all of this that we had,” she said.

Last night, Rausenberg shook his head in disbelief as the jury returned guilty verdicts on 41 of 42 counts.

“I didn’t think there would be not-guilty verdicts on everything, not by any means,” he told NBC4. “And I was okay with that. I’m willing to take that responsibility but I still did not do everything that was presented.”

Rausenberg did not want to talk about the eight and a half minute video recovered from his cell phone that showed him  groping and touching a young girl on his lap other than to say he was “not myself at the time.”

He said the video may be central to an appeal of Monday’s verdicts and insists that was the only video he’d ever made.

Rausenberg says he regrets everyone having to go through the trial process, adding that it was also frustrating for him.

“It was gut-wrenching to hear things that may have happened and things that didn’t happen.”

Rausenberg says jurors were not given the complete transcript of his interrogation by detectives.

He questioned the credibility of the testimony by some of the alleged victims, adding that one victim’s testimony varied significantly from her original sworn affidavit.

Rausenberg insists he is not a pedophile but says he “made some mistakes – lack of boundaries.”

Rausenberg will be sentenced on Thursday and faces a maximum of 312 years to life.
