GREEN BAY, WI (WBAY) – For the 15th year, a Wisconsin couple is traveling more than 200 miles in a horse and buggy to see the Green Bay Packers play.

Tomah residents Bob and Maren Retzlaff are heading to Lambeau Field for Sunday’s home opener against the Detroit Lions. They have been on the road for nine days. It’s quite the sight for people passing by.

“She did the paint job and the lettering,” Bob Retzlaff said. “Had one of her granddaughters help her for one day.”

Maren Retzlaff says she gets the inspiration from all the sights they see during the long journey through the country roads.

“Well, I could create my own Pinterest page with all of the yard things,” she said. “I’m always taking pictures and getting ideas, and then I go home, and I’m too lazy. It’s really great stuff out there. People are so creative!”

Every year, the couple finds new people and places. They’ve also made some upgrades during that time.

“We had a one seater buggy for a number of years,” Maren Retzlaff said. “This one’s been on the road for six or seven years. Six years, I think.

“The dog wanted her own seat was the deal so. She likes to talk if she sees any body moving fast, but she sleeps mainly.”

The horse that takes the couple on the ride, Rich, is a 16-year-old standardbred. He has made the trip for the last six years.

Before the horse was making the trip to see the Packers, he was an athlete in his own right, with the markings to show it.

“When he was on the racetrack, how many races, how many races he ran,” Bob Retzlaff said.

As for the team the foursome is pulling for, they predict a good road ahead for the Packers.

“Planning on going to that Packer game and watching that big win coming on!” Bob Retzlaff said.

Whether it’s discussing life on the road or the Packers, Bob Retzlaff says the uphill battles are well worth their while.

“People just don’t realize you got the peaks and valleys in life, and you’ve got to go through the valleys to to enjoy the peaks, and that’s what life’s all about,” he said.
