More than two months have passed since a hit-and-run crash on Interstate 70 left a motorcyclist dead and police are still searching for the driver who fled the scene.
On July 25, just before 11:30pm Joseph Hayes was riding his Harley Davidson east on I-70 near Alum Creek Drive when a Chevrolet Trailblazer abruptly changed lanes and struck the motorcycle. Hayes was thrown from the Harley as it crashed into the median wall and skidded down the road.
A witness told investigators the driver of the Trailblazer initially stopped, but when she saw Hayes’ condition, she jumped back in the vehicle and sped off, leaving Hayes lying on the ground with a serious head injury.
According to police, Hayes was transported by a Columbus Division of Fire medic to Grant Medical Center in critical condition. He passed away from his injuries two days later.
The witness told police the driver of the Trailblazer was a black woman with star tattoos on her right leg. The Trailblazer was blue and had Indiana plates.
