COLUMBUS (WCMH) – There were cheers and victory dances in Cannon ball, North Dakota as the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers denied an easement for the Dakota Access Pipeline on Sunday. The Secretary of the Army Corps of Engineers told the Standing Rock Sioux Chairman that the current route for the controversial Dakota Access Pipeline will be denied.

It was also another day of action for #NoDAPL protesters in Columbus, where about 100 people came to demonstrate at Goodale Park Sunday afternoon.

While many are happy the pipeline is being halted, they still believe there’s more work to be done.

“We stand with Standing Rock!” they chanted. “Water is life!”

“This is one of hundreds of pipelines that are being put through. Hundreds,” said protester Katie LeBlanc.

Organizer Corey Andon said stopping this pipeline is a positive step forward, but it’s still not enough.

“The people don’t want pipelines. The people want renewable energy resources,” he said. “We don’t want to pollute and destroy our earth anymore.”

Protester Rudy Gerdeman just returned from Cannon ball, North Dakota last week.

“We were tear gassed, shot at with rubber bullets,” he said. “They sprayed us with water cannons.”

He said he hopes today’s victory is the start of a new tomorrow.

“I stand with Standing Rock and I stand for human and civil rights,” said Gerdeman.

“We all know that this black snake is only able to exist because of the snakes that lie in our communities wherever we call home,” said LeBlanc.

She’s a Native woman who’s worked on food and water access issues across the U.S.

“This is the only thing I’ve ever known is not having water and if it is it’s probably going to give you cancer or kill you,” she said. “They’re showing us what it is to be in a community and that a community is only protected whenever you defend your community.”

Andon said he will continue to demonstrate and raise awareness about this issue.

“I feel like we’re so deep in a system of predatory capitalism where they’re just out to make the buck. They’ve officially left the people behind and our rights, our voices don’t matter anymore to them,” he said. “I’m going to keep organizing. I’m going to keep fighting back at the establishment. I’m going to keep fighting back in every way I can.”
