RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil (WCMH) — Team USA member Dana Vollmer became just the second American woman to win a medal after giving birth Saturday night.

Vollmer, 28, swam the third leg in the 4×100-meter freestyle relay. The American team set a new US record on their way to a silver medal finish with a time of three minutes, 31.89 seconds.

The Australian team set a world record to claim gold over the U.S. with a time of three minutes, 30.65 seconds.

Vollmer also swam the 100m butterfly semifinal earlier Saturday evening to advance to Sunday’s final. Her time was her best since she gave birth to her son Arlen, which she did in March 2015.

“To come back, it was humbling,” Vollmer told USA TODAY Sports. “I could hardly make it through warm-up … To think that I would be here swimming faster than I ever have in season? No. I’m stoked that I am, and I’m really excited that I am, and I feel happier in my own life and in my schedule and in the routine that I have – and that makes me really excited going forward.”

Vollmer is just the second American woman to earn any medal after giving birth. She could become the first American swimmer to win individual gold as a mother during tonight’s 100m butterfly finals.
