COLUMBUS, Ohio (WCMH) – A recent study revealed that Ohio ranks among the top 10 states with the most cigarette smokers. 

The study by vape manufacturer YoCan analyzed data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and America’s Health Rankings to see which states had the highest percentage of adults who reported smoking at least 100 cigarettes in their lifetime and who currently smoke “daily” or “some days.”

Ohio came in sixth place on the list, with an average of 16.6% of adults in the state reportedly being consistent smokers. This is made up of 17.40% for ages 18 to 44, 21% for ages 45 to 64, and 11.40% for ages 65 and over.

West Virginia has the highest percentage of consistent smokers, according to the study. Overall, 20.47% of adults reported smoking daily or some days. This is split up into 22.60% for adults aged 18-44, 26.20% for adults aged 45-64, and 12.6% for adults aged 65 and over.

Coming in second place is Arkansas, with an average of 18.17% of adults in the state reportedly being consistent smokers. 19.10% of adults aged 18-44 reported smoking daily or some days, 24% of adults aged 45-64, and 11.40% of those aged 65 and over.

Tennessee comes in third on the list. 18.07% of adults aged 18-44 reported consistently smoking, 24.10% of those aged 45-64, and 12.10% of those aged 65 and over.

Fourth place goes to Kentucky, which comes in with an overall average percentage of 17.20% consistent smokers. This is split into 14.90% for adults aged 18-44, 25% for adults aged 45-64, and 11.70% for those aged 65 and over.

Rounding out the top five is Mississippi, where overall, 17.03% of adults reported consistently smoking. This consists of 17.20% for adults aged 18-44, 21% for those aged 45-64, and 12.90% for those aged 65 and over.

Ohio, Louisiana, Missouri, Indiana and Oklahoma complete the top 10.
