Day before Easter, man accused of cruelty to rabbit

SANTA PAULA, CA (WCMH) – A California man is accused of swinging a rabbit by the ears and lighting it on fire.

It happened Saturday morning in Santa Paula, California.


According to Santa Paula police, Juan Lemus, 29 told officers that the rabbit was already dead when he found it and that he lit a piece of paper on fire, not the rabbit.

A necropsy determined the rabbit died from blunt force trauma to the head. The rabbit was later found dead in a dirt lot lying next to a pile of smoldering paper.

Lemus was arrested andcharged with animal cruelty, arson and burglary. After he was arrested, officers found a methamphetamine pipe in his possession.

Police later determined he was under the influence of drugs. He was also charged with possession of drug paraphernalia and being under the influence of a controlled substance.

Police are now looking for anyone who may be missing a rabbit.
