DELAWARE, OH (WCMH) — A 13-year-old middle school student was in a crosswalk on her way to school Wednesday morning when she was struck by a car and seriously injured.

Police say a 29-year-old woman had just left her home and was southbound on Troy Rd when the accident happened. The woman told police she did not see the pedestrian in the crosswalk at Barrett St. until it was too late to avoid hitting her.

The 13-year-old is a student at Dempsey Middle School. Police say she was thrown over the hood of the woman’s car and into the windshield and then landed on the pavement.

Police say the teenager was initially transported to Grady Memorial Hospital but then transferred to Nationwide Children’s Hospital with what they describe as very serious injuries.

No charges have been filed. The accident remains under investigation.

The crosswalk at Barrett Street did not exist until four years ago, after neighbors demanded it. But even since then the intersection has been a problem.

A police search of accident records shows a total of 16 accidents at the intersection of Troy Rd and Barrett St since 2012. Half of them involved rear-end collisions. None of them involved a pedestrian until today.

Danessa Higgins led the fight to get a crosswalk, but says she will now fight for something more.

“I prefer to see a light to get people to slow down at the crosswalk, you know where the kids walk up and push a button and it flashes a brighter light so they (motorists) could actually see them in the morning,” Higgins said.Keep checking NBC4i.com for real-time updates on this story.
