SPARTANBURG, SC (WCMH) — Denny’s is the latest chain to embrace America’s appetite for fresh ingredients.

The company says it is now going to use fresh buttermilk and eggs in its pancake mix. The old recipe used a pre-made powered mix that just required the cooks to add water.

Denny’s says the new recipe will make it’s pancakes 50% fluffier.

“Our old pancakes were fine, but America deserved better,” Denny’s said in a statement“We knew we had to create a recipe that was so good it would even top those being made in kitchens across the country. So, we reworked our recipe. Added good stuff like fresh buttermilk, real eggs, flour and a hint of vanilla. The result? Our 50% fluffier pancakes just might be better than home.”You can get the new pancakes in several flavors, including traditional, sticky bun and peanut butter cup.

The company is hoping the change will make them more competitive with companies like IHOP and McDonald’s which recently began touting changes to its menu to highlight fresh ingredients.

“If they don’t (change), consumers have way too many choices today,” Mark Cotter, CEO of consulting firm The Food Group, told USA Today. “If these companies do not modify what they put in their products … these brands will slowly die.”

Denny’s says breakfast accounts for 24% of its average daily sales. What others are clicking on:
