ORLANDO, FL (KHON) — Disney’s latest animated movie “Moana” will not be in theaters until Thanksgiving, but the company has already come under fire for selling a Halloween costume of one of its major characters that some say is in poor taste.
The controversy surrounds the Halloween costume version of the demigod Maui, the character voiced by Dwayne Johnson.
While it looks a lot like how the character is depicted – an earlier point of contention, criticized by some as too bulked-up – some people on social media have criticized the costume, calling it a version of “brownface” and that the Polynesian cultural look shouldn’t be a costume.
It’s available for sale at Disney stores and online, consists of a padded bodysuit with tattoos, a rope necklace and, according to the online description, “island-style skirt.”
Disney hasn’t commented on the criticism.
