GAINESVILLE, FL (NBC News) — Doctors in Florida say the man developed liver failure after consuming too many energy drinks.
The 50-year-old man told doctors he drank four to five energy drinks every day for three weeks, but soon began to develop abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting and dark urine.
A biopsy of his liver showed severe hepatitis from the excessive consumption of niacin.
Each bottle of his energy drink contained 40mg of niacin, which is 200 percent of the recommended daily value.
The man was monitored closely by doctors and discontinued all use of energy drinks.
