Dog left in Cincinnati SPCA van for 16 hours dies, officials say

CINCINNATI, Ohio (WLWT)–Officials say a dog had to be euthanized after being left in a transfer van overnight in freezing temperatures.

SPCA Cincinnati vice president of strategic initiatives Dr. Dave LeBorveau said four employees were transporting the dog from the Northside facility to Sharonville on Thursday. He said they failed to follow the organization’s unloading procedure.

LeBorveau said the male pit bull mix was left alone in the van for roughly 16 hours. He was found in hypothermic state around 8 a.m. Friday.

A veterinary facility treated him, but it was determined to be more humane to put the dog down, according to LeBorveau.

He said the four employees were disciplined, but remain employed.

LeBorveau told WLWT this type of thing has never happened before, and if he has it his way, will never happen again.

The SPCA transports nearly 7,000 dogs a year.
