COLUMBUS (WCMH) — The sixth annual Dragon Boat Races were held Sunday at the Scioto Audubon Park as 17 teams paddled in unison to “fly” their dragons across the water.
Event organizers say it’s one of the fastest growing sports in the world and that teamwork is key to its success.
The dragon boat canoes have a decorative dragon head on the front and a tail on the back. A drummer sits facing the paddlers and directs them with the beat of the drum while a steersman stands in the back and guides the boat.
Rowers paddle based on the drumming, so staying in sync with one another is crucial to propelling the boat forward. Races are typically 500 meters.
According to the Asian culture, the dragon is a symbol of prosperity. Event organizers say dragon boat racing dates back a thousand years.
