JASPER COUNTY, Ind. (WLFI) – According to Indiana State Police, a driver of a passenger car spilled a drink on herself, causing her to sideswipe a school bus in northwest Indiana Sunday afternoon.
Police said the crash happened on Interstate 65 near mile marker 230 in Jasper County after 23-year-old Dominique Small, of Terre Haute, was traveling south in a 2001 Kia when she spilled a drink on herself and sideswiped a Griffith School Corporation bus, which caused the bus to overturn.
A school bus from Kankakee Valley School Corporation and ambulances took 20 people to Franciscan Jasper County Hospital in Rensselaer. All the injuries were non-life threatening. Small and her passenger were also taken to Franciscan Jasper County Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.According to a press release from the Griffith High School, Griffith’s Freshmen boys basketball coach David Garrett was airlifted to the University of Chicago Hospital.
The team was on its way to Lafayette for a semistate tournament game.
“Out hearts are heavy today,” Griffith Public Schools Superintendent Peter Morikis stated in the release. “What began with excitement – as the fulfillment of a dream to play in the semistate tournament – has ended tragically. We are praying today for the members of our Griffith school family, who have been injured.”Traffic was backed up for almost 10 miles along I-65 during while officials investigated the crash.Griffith’s game against Marion has been postponed at this time.WLFI has more information on this incident.
