DUBLIN, OH (WCMH) — Dublin Police have been warning residents all summer about a rash in recent break-ins. Now the number is on the rise again.
Residents tell NBC4 that Dublin police have stepped up patrols in this area. Since June 1st, police have filed 21 burglary reports, for 16 of those garage doors where open.
“It’s a stereotypical, it’s the ‘Dublin bubble’, like it won’t happen in Dublin, but it happens everywhere,” says Olivia Stukey, resident.
Olivia Stukey is now keeping a watchful eye after the home she babysits for was broken into earlier this month.
She says her neighbors were alarmed after they noticed their son’s $350 toy power car was missing. Thieves also got their hands on the families a power washer.
“For the last couple of years open garage door burglaries have only been about five pervent of our burglaries. But we’ve seen just over 15 in the last month,” said Heinz von Eckartsberg, Dublin Chief of Police. “It does look like people are driving around looking for this.”
Eckartsberg says thieves were able to get away with TVs, laptops, credit cards and other items left in cars inside open garages.
Police want you to keep these tips in mind:
- Keep your garage door closed during the day and at night.
- Lock house Windows and doors.
- Install an alarm system.
- And sign up for the vacation house watch program when you are out of town.
