HUNAN PROVINCE, China (WCMH)–Some people go to great lengths for love, but Alexander Pieter Cirk took romantic gestures to a new level when he spent 10 days in the airport waiting for his online girlfriend.
China Central TV reports that Cirk, 41, met a 26-year-old woman on a dating site and began talking to her. Cirk lives in the Netherlands, and decided to fly to central China’s Hunan Province to meet the woman, who is only identified by her last name Zhang.
CCTV reports that no one was there to welcome Cirk upon his arrival. He waited in the terminal for 10 days, hoping she would show up. Photos of him at the airport began circulating on social media, and local news reports followed.
Cirk reportedly had to be taken to a local hospital because he was so exhausted.
Zhang told a local news outlet that Cirk had indeed agreed to fly out–next year.
“We had advanced our romantic relationship but later he seemed a little callous toward me,” Zhang said, according to CCTV. “One day he sent me a photo of air tickets abruptly, and I thought it was a joke. He didn’t contact me later.”
Zhang said she was in another city getting plastic surgery when Cirk landed, and didn’t get any of his messages. However, she told the TV channel she would meet him after her recovery, and that she is still interested in maintaining the relationship.
Cirk reportedly flew home Monday.
