RALEIGH, NC (WCMH) — The 2,900 mile stretch of bike path would run from Calais, Maine along the east coast to Key West, Florida.
The project was first conceived in 1991 by the group East Coast Greenway Alliance.
The group says the trail would be open to any non-motorized user.
The trail works, “through partnerships with national, state, and local government agencies, trail organizations, engineering firms, civic organizations, and scores of other groups that support the ECG vision,” according to the ECG website.
According to EcoWatch.com, the bike path would travel through 25 cities and 16 states.
Currently, 850 miles of the path exist and another 200 miles should be finished by 2020, according to the website FastCo.Exist.com.
The trail will mainly consist of already built paths that would be linked together through the help of the ECGA and local communities.
FastCo.Exist.com says that if you were to ride 50 miles of the trail a day, it would take you less than two months to finish.
There is no timetable for the completion of the trail.
