PASCO COUNTY, Fla. (WFLA) – Crews responded to an electrical fire Wednesday at Hudson’s Regional Medical Center Bayonet Point, which knocked out power to the hospital. A total of 209 patients, including 12 critically ill patients, have been evacuated overnight. The patients are being taken to other hospitals.
The fire was reported in the generator room around 6:15 p.m. Wednesday, knocking out power to most of the hospital. Bayonet Point did not have enough backup power to safely operate.
Rescue crews and law enforcement from five counties – Pasco, Hernando, Citrus, Sumpter and Polk counties – responded, along with the City of Clearwater, to assist in the mass evacuation, which took until 1 a.m. Thursday.
Critically ill patients were evacuated first. Those patients were on ventilators in the Intensive Care Unit. Each patient was accompanied by a physician or nurse.
According to RMC Bayonet Point, about four dozen patients were taken to Oak Hill Hospital in Brooksville. The others were transported to regional facilities.
Surgeries scheduled for Thursday have been rescheduled, and all patients have been notified.
No injuries occurred in the incident or transporting of patients.
