COLUMBUS, Ohio (WCMH) – A Columbus father is burying his only son after a drive-by shooting earlier this week.

It happened early Monday evening in the 700 block of South Weyant Avenue. Armani Anderson was playing dice with Devon Wyrick around 5:15 p.m. Monday when a car drove by, and someone fired several bullets.

“Like a slug to the chest. Like, it’s still unreal to me,” says his father, David Jones-Anderson. “Like I don’t believe it.”

Armani was pronounced dead at the hospital. He was only 14. Wyrick, 21, was also taken to the hospital in stable condition.

“It’s still like a bad dream,” says Jones-Anderson. “He died for something that wasn’t meant for him. Like, he wasn’t supposed to be over there. I don’t know who he was with, but I know he wasn’t supposed to be there.”

Jones-Anderson got the news just as he got off work Monday. He didn’t know the Grove City teen was in Columbus that evening. He says he knows most of Armani’s friends and that he wasn’t running with a rough crowd or getting trouble. He says Armani was a funny kid who loved football.

“Everybody loved him. Like, goofy kid, liked to joke,” he say. “Just a kid. If anything, they murdered a baby, for real.”

A private family funeral is planned for Monday.
