NEW ALBANY, OH (WCMH) — A major investment in Central Ohio by Facebook was announced Tuesday. A new data center will be built in Licking County by a company with two billion clients.

This is a first for Ohio. By 2019, a 345-acre farm field on Beech Road will become an enormous data center for Facebook.

The data center will be 900,000 square feet to be exact, with at least 100 full-time high-tech jobs that Facebook Data Center and Strategy Director Rachel Peterson said will start hiring on Tuesday.

“This is the facility that is going to serve Facebook traffic from all over the world. It will deliver your news feed, photos and videos from you loved ones, and pictures from your class reunion and so forth,” Peterson said.

JobsOhio President John Minor Jr. told a crowd at the New Albany Village Hall what this investment means for the area and state.

“This is significant because this is the second largest capital investment we have seen here in the state,” Minor said.

The governor spoke about how Ohio is fast becoming a high tech destination.

“Here in Ohio you have it all! You have got the cool factor, you’ve got exciting companies and a lower cost of living,” John Kasich told the crowd.

The facility will be built in three phases, and Facebook officials said they plan on investing $750 million in the facilities.  Peterson said the buildings will be powered by 100 % renewable energy. “We are excited to be here, we think Ohio and New Albany are a perfect fit for Facebook and we cannot wait to get started,” she said.

With Amazon only miles away, local officials said good things are happening in Licking County.

“This is not short-term, this is a long-term commitment to possibly three data centers, billion dollar investment. There will be jobs created, construction jobs created, and it is changing the character and complexion of our community in a positive way,” said Tim Bubb, Licking County Commissioner.

He said Licking Heights School District will also see an influx of dollars and job opportunities for students with technical skills.
