DANVILLE, Ohio (WCMH)–A small community is still in shock after Danville Police Officer Tom Cottrell was gunned down late Sunday night.
It happened late Sunday night right beside the city’s municipal building. The suspect, Herschel Ray Jones III, has been arrested.
Cottrell is being remembered as a great cop who loved kids, especially his three daughters.
“It’s, like, still fresh and everything,” says 15-year-old Brook Cottrell.
She doesn’t know how to feel. She’s smiling and trying to be brave, but she just lost her dad.
“He was always there for you. You could call him, he’d talk you (through) anything,” she says.
Cottrell’s ex-wife Anna Montgomery said he was a great dad to their three girls.
“That man took something from my girls that none of us can ever give them back,” says Cottrell’s ex-wife Anna Montgomery.
Twelve-year-old A.J. didn’t want to talk to us on camera. But she sent us some video of her dad playing with his longtime girlfriend’s boys, trying to demonstrate how much fun he was and how much he loved life.
For Brook, that’s something that can’t be replaced.
“He was my dad, like… I spent a lot of time with him. He did almost everything he could to help us with everything. He’s gone now, so…”
Brook says she’s working to get her grades up, because that’s what her dad wanted her to do.
Sixteen-year-old Courtney Cottrell couldn’t meet with NBC4. She was working on her CPR certification. She’s studying to be a physical therapist, so she can help people like her dad.
