FBI, homeland security investigate explosion at charity 5K

SEASIDE PARK, NJ (WCMH) – The FBI and the Department of Homeland Security are investigating an explosion at a Marine charity race.

New Jersey police say that a pipe bomb detonated in a trash can round 9:30am. The 5K race, which was scheduled to start around 9am and was delayed because of late sign ins, was canceled after the explosion according to NBC New York.

No injuries have been reported.

Police say the bomb squad is investigating another suspicious package not far from the first explosion. Houses near the explosion have been evacuated.

The race this morning was a charity event to benefit the MARSOC Foundation, a non-profit that supports “active duty and medically retired MARSOC personnel and their families as well as to the families of Marines and Sailors who have lost their lives in service to our Nation.”
