COLUMBUS (WCMH) — An injured construction worker was put on a stretcher and lowered to the ground with a crane in the Short North on Friday afternoon after his injuries would not allow him to walk back down the site’s stairwell.

The man, who was trapped approximately 130 feet high, left the scene in stable condition in an ambulance. His employer told NBC4’s Matt Edwards he is in “good spirits” and communicating with his family. They declined to identify him.

Mike Powell, a 22-year veteran of the Columbus Fire Department, was lowered down with the man in order to monitor his condition and keep him calm.

“The biggest thing is keeping him comfortable because he’s looking straight up in the sky and has no idea where he is,” says Powell, who just underwent training for crane rescues last month. “That’s something we train for.”

It was Powell’s first crane rescue in his more than two decades on the job.

A portion of High Street was closed for nearly three hours while first responders kept the scene secure and helped the man arrive safely to the hospital.
