COLUMBUS (WCMH) — A Buddhist temple in the 200 block of Grubb Street was ravaged by fire at about 4:30 Sunday morning.

Columbus fire officials say no one was hurt in the fire, but two adults were evacuated from a home south of the temple due a risk that the temple could collapse.

Firefighters said flames were shooting through the roof, and fire was found in the basement when they arrived.

Rich St. was closed between Sandusky St. and Skidmore St. while crews battled the blaze.

Members of the Columbus KTC Buddhist Center say they don’t know where they’ll pray and meditate now.

Firefighters were able to retrieve a flag that had flown from the top of the Buddhist center.

It was not damaged in the fire. Members of the center say the symbol on the flag represents the union of wisdom and compassion and also the union of heaven and earth.

Fire investigators say the fire is suspicious in nature, but no exact cause has been determined yet.

No one was hurt as a result of the fire.

Members have started a GoFundMe page “to help pay for costs and furnishings not covered by insurance, to rent space (if necessary) to house our programs in the coming weeks, and to form the basis of our next steps – whatever they might be – to provide a home for our dharma family in the days to come.”
