COLUMBUS (WCMH)–A former detective with Mount Vernon Police was sentenced to 6 years in prison for extortion, the Department of Justice announced Thursday.
Matthew L. Dailey, 45, of Howard, reportedly used his position to falsify documents, extort others, traffic in narcotics, and use a firearm while committing drug trafficking crimes.
Dailey investigated narcotics crimes and general crimes for the Mount Vernon Police Department.
He allegedly asked a former informant to sell drugs for him in September 2015. Dailey reportedly provided the individual with marijuana, methamphetamine, bath salts and ecstasy pills to sell and split the profits.
A portion of the drugs came from the police department’s property room, which Dailey supervised.
A second confidential informant reportedly sold large quantities of oxycodone pills to Dailey around five days a week for seven months. The second confidential informant told investigators that Daily had asked him to sell marijuana, methamphetamine, and cocaine for him, according to a press release.
Investigators say his actions affected nearly 40 cases.
He pleaded guilty on Dec. 21, 2015. He also agreed to pay restitution to the Mount Vernon Police Department, forfeit weapons, and a ban on future employment in any law enforcement capacity.
