COLUMBUS (WCMH) — The Franklin County Dog Shelter will be closed through the weekend as staff continue to monitor the health of the dogs.

One canine at the shelter tested positive for distemper. Staff are evaluating all other dogs “to assess their individual risk of transmitting infectious diseases, including distemper.”

The shelter first reported the positive test on Thursday evening. In addition to the positive test result, the shelter said Thursday that two other dogs have been tested. There have been no additional test results released.

The shelter says that distemper is not dangerous to people. It is highly contagious to some dogs, and can be deadly. All dogs are vaccinated against distemper when they come in to the shelter, but new dogs with no previous vaccinations are at risk.

Kevin O’Leary and and Brittany Good are first time dog owners. They just got their dog Lucas at the Franklin County Dog Shelter on Thursday.

But the couple quickly learned the shelter shut down less than 24 hours after they got Lucas because of a confirmed case of canine distemper.

“I’m trying not to overthink about it because we don’t know for sure if he would or wouldn’t have it,” Good explained. “But it is concerning, because what would I do in a situation like that–especially since I’ve never owned a dog?”

The Director of the Franklin County Dog Shelter, Don Winstel, says he doesn’t want people to panic and that distemper is rare.

“We certainly have a couple of dogs that we’re very interested in monitoring,” he said. “We’re monitoring all of them–but a couple of them in terms of symptoms that we’re monitoring very closely.”
